Newborn :: Harrison

October 23, 2014

Newborn Harrison came into the studio hungry as a bear.  I know in life, men eat more than women, but this little guy had an appetite like no other!  Guess he’s bulking up for baseball season.  When I spoke to his mom about her session she said she wanted to tie baseball into some of the shots.  My mind pretty much exploded.  In the photography world we talk about ideal clients and the ones we actually get.  These guys were the real deal.  They had a plan but totally open to my ideas and suggestions. I can’t tell you how important all this is to getting the most from your session.  They came prepared, including lots of milk for the little one, and we hit a home run.  HAHAHA see what I did there?!?!  I still have the ability to amuse myself with jokes.  Guess that’s one thing i didn’t lose when I had my own baby!  She got my brain and my eyelashes but not my humour.  Not yet anyway!

Can’t wait to see this little guy grow up.  Who knows, maybe he will play for the Jays in 20 years!

My Baby Shower – Sparkles, Hearts, Flamingos and all things Sugar

July 14, 2014

Baby showers are part of the fun of having a baby.  So glad I’m having a girl as there are sooooo many cute ideas out there, almost too many to choose.  I have a thing for flamingos, not really sure why but remember them in my grandmothers backyard when I was a kid and they always made me smile.  Granted over the years I have developed a taste for shiny objects, so why not paint some of the flamingos a metallic pink and the rest cover in sparkles.  This is where I say I have the best husband ever as he spent an evening in the yard with a sea of flamingos and a can of pink spray paint.  Now he has a metallic sheen to his fave shorts. Whoops.  Thank god my sister in law found some ‘already made’ sparkly flamingos as I had jars upon jars of pink sparkles ready for Terry.  Even though he will do anything for me, it’s funny what a pregnant woman can get away with.  I even had my mom sitting in the backyard staining the memory box.  My goal was to have everyone write something about myself or my husband and when our baby is old enough we can sit together and read them.  Dangerous I know.  I haven’t peeked and don’t intend on it.  This will be something fun we can do together later on and might bring up some stories and feelings that we totally forgot about. YAY DIY!

I’m a huge DIY person incase you can’t tell and it all started with painting a table cloth in a semi tie dye way.  That turned into a 2 week project. It really looked so much easier online!  Once all that effort was invested there was no going back.  I had my paint and brush and everything in the house was fair game.  Thanks to some amazing local vendors I was able to add more elements and save my sanity.  Well at least some of it!

I wouldn’t have had such a beautiful day without some help from old friends and new.  Working with great vendors can really make an event.  The stunning cake from TLC Theme Cakes totally made the sweet table. Tina was able to tie the gold into the flamingo feathers and did an ombre cake I wish I had at my wedding.  Actually that cake was 100 times better than the one I had at my wedding!

Fancy It Pretty supplied some super cute pillows, wall prints and flamingo theme cake trays.  I had been following Hailey on instagram for a while and when she posted photos of some flamingo theme trays my mouth dropped.  Someone else on the same track as me.  I don’t know anyone that shared my love for flamingos or saw how much potential they have until now.  Granted I see them everywhere these days but I like to think I knew about this trend long before!

What little girls party would be complete without some tutu’s?!?!?  Flirty Bambini Trends by Baby Fashionista and I have worked together in past and as always she provided a some sickeningly cute tutu’s for decor.  I can’t wait to have this little one and dress her up in all things tulle.  Watch, I’m going to have a little girl who hates dresses, pink, sparkles, and anything girly.  My mom always said ‘I hope you have a child just like you’….  I was a perfect child except for not wanting to dress like a girl or have pink walls or play with barbies….. So who knows.  They do say the apple doesn’t fall far from the tree.

With every good party theres a loot bag.  In this case I wanted to give the girls something they would use and love.  Jaime from Nostalgie Soaps made some custom goodies to match the theme.  Hearts, pink, sweets.  UGH I just want to hang out in the bath until this baby comes.  I bet I could get away with it too!

Want to check out these lovely ladies?!?!

And Baby Makes Three!

July 10, 2014

ONCE UPON A TIME…
So to start this story at the beginning I’m going to have to fill you in on a little detail about myself. I hate math. Always have and always will. You might as well be speaking Chinese to me when it comes to numbers. In my eyes there is now way to tell if it looks right just by looking at them. English, you can read what is written and kinda gauge if it sounds right or not. Math, not so much. I can come up with 17 answers to the exact same question and show my work for each one. In the end none will be right and there will be a big red X. Trust me this will tie in later on.

Now to get to where this whole baby thing began. We decided to try as neither of us is getting any younger. Better looking with age, YES. Younger, NO. It was Movember, and for anyone unfamiliar with this month it’s November but for men it means growing a mustache. Not just any mustache but they are given free reign to grow it however they see fit. Year one the men always do something simple. Then they get brave and bust out the creepiest, grossest, awkward looking patches of hair ever. It’s not for looks anymore it’s all for reactions. Who can get the most attention from grossed out women and jealous men who can’t seem to grow more than they did at age 13. For once having that 5 o’clock shadow everyday comes in handy. Those are the ‘real men’. The ones that win the office contests, creep women out on the subway and generally make their wives want to hurl at the thought of kissing them. Ok maybe that’s a bit harsh. But maybe not. Movember is all about raising awareness and funds for men’s health (Prostate Cancer, Testicular Cancer and Mental Health). So it is a good thing in the end. For me it meant kissing what felt like a broom and what I would imagine it would feel like to kiss your uncle. Lets just say it was certainly a mood killer for me.

BAD MATH
It was the end of November and I figured I should be getting a visit from good old Aunt Flo in the next couple days. So until then I would save those really expensive pregnancy tests and just keep my fingers crossed that it worked this time. I don’t remember where I was going but I checked the date on my phone to see how many more days left until I could try a test. Everyone knows 28 days is average between ‘visits’ so I thought only two more days to go. Then the light bulb goes off. I have been miscounting my entire life. 20 years of bad math. See, I know it’s 28 days and most months have around 30. Yet I still counted from the same day (for example November 1 – December 1) as 28. Do you see where I’m going with this. I was always off. Since age 11 I just used the same number from the last time to calculate the next time. OMG idiot.

Once I get home I run into the washroom to take a test and see a faint pink stripe. FAIL. The pamphlet in the box clearly shows a bright pink line means your knocked up. So I message one of the only girls I know who’s had a baby and send her a pic via text just to be sure I didn’t do something wrong. ‘You’re pregnant” she tells me. Now I’m starting to panic. I don’t have another test and I have this elaborate plan on how to tell my husband when I do become pregnant. I can’t just say anything or I’ll ruin my surprise. UGH Pinterest you are amazing yet make my life complicated. I no longer can do anything the easy way. Actually I never could but it has enabled me to new heights. As always I have a plan. I head out to shoppers and buy a digital test. That won’t lie. Well at least it will say yes or no and not give me a half ass pink line.

So the little surprise I mentioned is actually a baby Toronto Maple Leaf jersey with my husband’s last name on it. Not the easiest thing to find. Went to Real Sports, Hockey Hall of Fame, Sportchek…..and so on. No luck. I called his fave store Ward & Patch Sports knowing they wouldn’t have it but might be able to direct me. Man alive finding one little jersey was turning into my lifes mission and thanks to Pinterest I couldn’t just tell my husband, I had to blow his mind! Sure enough the guys at Ward & Patch sent me to Pro Image in Newmarket. Two in stock. Sweet Jesus hold one for me I’m on my way! Once that was dealt with all I had to do was hide it from him until I needed it.

So back to the digital test. It was a Sunday so my husband plays hockey. Game was at night so I though perfect I’ll do the test then so he doesn’t catch me. Bad idea. Took the test and it said 1-2 weeks pregnant. My reaction was ‘OH CRAP’. Clearly deep inside I didn’t believe the little pink line or my girlfriend. OMG I needed to wrap the gift and set up something nice to give it to him. My mind was racing a mile a minute. It actually was happening. I could finally give him the jersey that was oh so cleaver. I got it wrapped, took some pics to share with you guys and sat down to let my mind race. He’s at hockey and I’m an idiot for doing it then and having to wait for him to get home. I am great at making myself crazy if you haven’t already figured that out.

Once my husband gets home I tell him I have a gift for him. Lets say something for Hannuka. He’s like ‘Your not supposed to get me anything’. Which I so cleaverly replied ‘Oh it’s just something small’. I had left it on the bed as that was the only place I could think to put it. Since it was dinner time he suggested we go for dinner and open it later. I was hungry so we went. Idiot. Now I was at dinner still holding this epic secret. The waitress asked if I wanted a drink and my heart dropped. I have wine with every meal pretty much so this was the beginning of the end. Obviously I said no and water would be fine. My husband looked at me and said you sure? OMG he’s going to figure it out and all my effort is wasted. But no he didn’t catch on. After dinner we go home and sit down to watch tv. I mention the gift again and said it’s on the bed. He said I’ll open it when I go up. I replied casually ‘OK’. OMG I have to watch an hour tv show now and hold this secret in. I’m an idiot. But for a good cause.

Finally it’s bed time and we head up. My husband sits on the bed starts unwrapping my Pinterest worthy gift and my heart freezes. I had strategically put the jersey in the box with the pregnancy test on top so that would be the first thing he would see. As he opened the box and pulled out the test, I thought I was going to pass out. No reaction. Just started at the stick as though he had no clue what it was. After watching that for a few seconds I reached into the bottom of the box and pulled out the digital one and handed it to him. Clearly the stupid light pink stripe confused him too. It makes processing the whole thing a lot more complicated. He looked at the digital test that said 1-2 weeks and his mouth dropped. He didn’t look up for what seemed like forever. Literally forever. I’m willing to bet it was a second or two max. I guess this is like when a guy proposes to a girl and she says yes after taking a second to process and for the guy it feels like eternity. It’s enough time to have 32 scenarios run through your head and your entire life flash before your eyes. Anyway, as he sat there with his mouth open staring at this stick I stared at him. Going over how much trouble it was to get this jersey, to hide it, to come up with the whole idea etc. Again it felt like forever. I don’t remember what happened after that as we were kinda both in awe but he loved the jersey and the surprise. Damn I’m good. Wait. It’s bed time and now I’m so wired I can’t sleep. Idiot.

Baby Gia

December 4, 2013

Newborn photography is fun.  Babies don’t scare me anymore.  Never thought the day would come but I actually don’t worry about legs falling off or barf all over.  Funny how we grow up. Live and learn I guess.

Baby Gia is the one that made me realize all this.  Yes she pooped and obviously it got on my hand, but I didn’t pass out.  Shocking right?!?!?! Poop and me don’t get along. It makes me feel all sorts of sick.  Not this time.

Think of all the possibilities now that I have conquered my fear!

I however haven’t gotten past the fact that babies look like other people – parents, siblings, the milkman (just kidding – old school joke). Once I start editing I can see expressions and facial features similar to others and in this case it’s her older brothers.  She looks just like Carson in my opinion but then there were a couple shots that she looked just like Logan.  So weird! In all instances these kids look just like their father. Just check his Instagram and Facebook. Maybe when she’s a bit older we will see more of her beautiful mom.  Can’t wait to capture more of these moments with you guys!

Thom Family Fall Session

November 24, 2013

Oak Ridges parks are stunning.  Why would I keep them a secret.

I met this family just over a year ago and was excited to see Fiona’s email for a family session.  Little Max has been on my mind since I got my hands on a Radio Flyer Fire Truck a month or so ago.  Not really sure why he came to mind but I just had to bring it along for our session. Guess I shouldn’t be so shocked but Max jumped right on and cruised around long enough for me to get the cutest photos of him.  He’s a little man now and his sweet personality is really starting to show.  Guess his parents are doing something right!  Thanks to Grandma and Auntie who helped behind the scenes as it can be difficult to get little ones to focus on the camera during family shoots.  Their funny faces were appreciated.

Link Family

November 14, 2013

Oakridges Family Photography is about to be changed forever. Obviously I had one of my favourite families to help me!

It’s a little known place that lies between Richmond Hill and Aurora in Ontario.  It’s home to Bond Lake which is part of The Oak Ridges Corridor Park Trail.  I want to say it’s like having a forest in the middle of the city and it happens to be very close to my home.  I’m not much for the wilderness but can’t resist the perfect location to do a family session.

I have known the Link family since before the kids were born.  It honestly feels like yesterday.  They aren’t even my kids and I’m saying time flies.  With the calm lake, leaves changing colour, warm breeze and my fave grey skies, this was the perfect day to do this family session.  With broken down stone buildings, tall trees and falling leaves, we got some amazing photos.  These kids are freaking cute and full of energy.  Making for some sweet and some hilarious shots.

As always, looking forward to next time!

Marnie :: Cinderella Session

November 10, 2013

Cinderella is a classic story which involves a ‘Once upon a time’ and a ‘Happily ever after’.  Disney wouldn’t have it any other way.  This session was part of a giveaway I offered my fans.  When Hayley called and gave me the green light to come up with something one of a kind, my mind went all over the place.  I have so many ideas and love when my clients just roll with it.

As everyone knows, the story of Cinderella starts out  with her doing chores for her step mother and step sisters.  Living in a dingy room cleaning all day.  One night her fairy godmother appeared and gave her the chance of a life time.  With the wave of a magic wand, Cinderella had a beautiful dress, a chariot made from a pumpkin and the opportunity to meet Prince Charming.  The only thing was she needed to be home by midnight before everything changed back.

Since we all know this story I will save you the time of reading and just say little Marnie made the perfect Princess.  Despite the weather we got a few smiles and twirls in front of the mirror.  Totally Princess if you ask me!

Little known fact – Princess love Chicken McNuggets and will do just about anything to get their hands on them!

Payton’s Vintage Session

September 7, 2013

Little Miss Payton rolled up to her vintage session and rocked it.  Her big blue eyes and sneaky little smile was only the beginning.  Clearly she knows what she’s doing in front of the camera and it made my job much easier.  This vintage session included a doll pram, old school Disney book, distressed crates and a few other props.  Tie it all together and we were able to capture some stunning images that fit the theme.  Once you see these shots you will know why I had so much fun.  As always Phyllis Rawlinson Park in Richmond Hill made the perfect backdrop. LOVE this place!

Baby Sofia

August 6, 2013

Newborn Photography is quickly becoming one of my favourite things.  Something about cute little babies who sleep and snuggle makes me want one of my own.  I always hear how kids keep their parents up at night, eat, poop and make a lot of noise.  Little Sofia makes me think the rest of you parents are just being dramatic.  She was the perfect little model and because of this I spent an entire day editing.  Getting these adorable photos was way too easy.  Guess big brother Alexander can take some credit too.  I love that the first thing their parents said was ‘Oh he’s shy’.  Funny because he didn’t stop talking for one second.  Ok maybe I’m exaggerating a little.  Long enough to take a few shots anyway.

Looking forward to many more sessions with you guys!

Baby Clara

August 4, 2013

I don’t know what it is about baby girls – they just look so cuddly and cute.  Baby Clara was absolutely a doll during her newborn photography session and made me fall in love with her within minutes.  Clara is the first born so I’m sure she will get all the spoiling she deserves.  When I spoke to her parents they wanted to do something different.  Something unique and that was personal to them.  Cue the most beautiful quilt ever.  Made by an aunt with love, this was by far my favourite backdrop to date.  So many soft colours and patterns!  I’ve already asked my mom to take a quilting class but the negotiations are still ongoing.

When I suggested we do some photographs and incorporate books, mom was all over it.  Turns out dad is math teacher and just so happened to have a text book around.  I know Clara looks all cozy but she did put up a fight.  Do you blame her?!?!?!?! Math is at the bottom of almost everyone’s favourite subject list.  That being said, it’s no wonder she quickly feel asleep for us.  No offence to all you number crunchers!

Can’t wait to see her grow up.  Congrats to both of you!

Jen
