This baby shower started out like no other I have been to.  It was an honor to participate in a special blessing ceremony for the upcoming birth of Kai.

Asha’s grandfather offered a prayer in their original language (Anishinabemowin) and her grandmother read an excerpt the book ‘Sing The Brave Song’ in which one of Asha’s relatives contributed.

Diane Mitchell, who has known Asha since birth, sang and drummed an honour song in the Mi’kmaq language – a language in the same Algonquin language family as Asha’s.

There were two requests made of guests:

1) Bring a bead which was added to a bracelet for Asha to wear during the birth.

2) A contribution to the medicine bundle for Kai.  Everyone shared their item and explained its significance and why they were passing that specific item on.

In the end, this was a beautiful day full of happiness.  Yes it was a room full of women so of course there were tears….but all out of pure happiness for the upcoming addition to the family.

Can’t wait to meet baby Kai!
